Two Elizas

About the Play

Two Elizas is a new historical play about women’s rights, motherhood, and loss. This piece, my fourth solo show, is based on the experiences of my ancestor Eliza Mercein Barry, who was involved in the landmark 1847 U.S. Supreme Court case Barry v. Mercein regarding the custody of her daughter. The play juxtaposes Eliza’s story with my own struggle to conceive my daughter, also named Eliza, as well as my experience with miscarriage. With the support of a Newcomb Institute grant and micro-residency at A Studio in the Woods, I presented a virtual reading of Two Elizas in May of 2021. Flying Carpet Theatre (FCT), will host a developmental workshop of the piece in spring of 2022.
